Rules of Engagement
On the way home from work today I was listening to my Ipod and a song I know I have listened to a hundred times came on but this particular time the bridge of the song caught my attention. The words were”It’s You we engage, its You we embrace when out hearts sing.” What really caught my attention was the phrase”Its You we engage.” What does it mean to engage with God? When you are engaged in a conversation with someone, you are totally there. It is not just you having a conversation with someone who may be in the same room but barely hear a word you say. How difficult is it to engage someone in conversation who is focused on a sporting event, movie, teltevision program, etc. It is impossible. I think that is how alot of Christians are with God. We may be in the same room with Him, but do we really engage? Are we distracted by the world and the things that are going on around us? If we are totally honest, we rarely engage with God. Even when we pray, most of may be having a conversation with God, but are we really engaged? Worship is a way to engage with God. I think there are so many misconceptions about what worship really is. Worship is not a style, it is a lifestyle. Worship is not about the the music we sing or the prayers that are prayed or even the sermon that is preached. Worship is engaging God and seeking His presence. Worship is not limited to a church. Worship should happen everyday in our homes, our jobs, our schools etc. When we engage God on a daily basis then it becomes easier to find the heart of God and to know the will of God even in simple things that we so often take for granted. Worship is about giving God glory not because of the things that he has done for us but simply just for who He is. The second part that struck me was that we engage with God, we do it with our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 says” Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” This is very important because there are so many things that are pressing for our hearts and our affections. Jesus said, where your treasures are, there will you heart be also.” Treasures may not necessarily be material possessions. They are anything that takes our hearts away from God. Just like the military has Rules of Engagement, God has Rules of Engagement also. In order to come to God we must have a clean heart. This doesn’t mean that we are sinless, it means that when we sin, we go before God and ask forgiveness. We can not engage God if we have sin in our lives. Our motives must be sincere to engage with God. Many people today use God like a genie in a bottle. They rub the bottle when they want God to do something for them, or get them out of this mess, or fix some problem. God is not our genie in a bottle. We must also have an obedient heart. God blesses those who walk in obedience. We cannot live like we want too and then when we get in a jam want God to get us out of. trouble. It doesn’t work that way. As my pastor says, “Blessings come with Obedience”. I am in the process of reading a book Waking the Dead by John Eldridge. It is a great book about the glory of a heart fully alive. A definite must read. The song was “When Our Hearts Sing” by Rush of Fools. Check it out on ITunes.
