When I Think About the Lord

Yesterday morning we had an incredible time of worship. Over the past few months, it has been a challenge for us to get the congregation to engage in worship and not just be spectators. I have noticed that during our corporate fast that people are more focused on God and on the act of worship. The whole atmosphere really changed when we began to sing a song by Hillsong called ‘When I Think About the Lord” This is an incredible song. As I sang, I began to think about the all the things that He has done for me. The chorus opens up with “It makes me wanna shout,  Hallelujah, thank you Jesus, Lord your worthy of all the glory and all the honor and all the praise.” He is the only one that is worthy of all the glory, honor and praise. We then went back to the chorus and sang it accapella. Our little 15 member choir sounded like a 100 member choir at that point. Each person was singing with all their heart, soul, and might to the Lord. It wasn’t about performance, it was a true, genuine awe of God and what He has done in all of our lives.  I think if we all stop and think more about the Lord has done for us, we will worship Him out of a heart of thankfulness and not out of obligation.

Sunday Setlist for House of Worship and Ministries Jesup, Ga

We had a great service today. We had communion at the end of the service and it was a sweet time. We just sang in the evening service. We sang some old songs, new songs, fast songs, slow songs. We sang Contemporary, Southern Gospel, Praise and Worship and Hymns. We even sang a few songs in both services. It is great to be apart of a church that is not afraid to embrace the new but does not throw the old. I still enjoy singing these songs sometimes.

Sunday Morning

Things were a little different this morning. Our pianist had her baby on Thursday so she was out and our drummer was out. Lucky for us, our worship leader’s mother-in-law was visting and she played for us. I was a little concerned when she looked at the set list and made the comment that she did not know any of these songs but she did a great job. Our leader’s 12 year old filled in on the drums. He is going to be amazing in a few years.

White Girl Can’t Dance

This week our church is hosting a conference that is being led by a church in the Bahamas. For the past 4 years that I have been at this church, they come every July. They take a boat from the Bahamas to Miami and then charter a bus to Jesup, Ga. Last year they brought about 135 people with them and this year they brought about 55. Financial difficulties are hitting everywhere!

Bahamians are some of the most gracious people you will ever meet. They hug you coming in and going out. It doesn’t matter that they don’t know you from Adam’s house cat! They are so genuine in their praise and worship to God. My friend Joey and I watched this guy dance for almost 2 hours. We were trying to pick up some of his dance moves to use on Sunday. We gave up…..after all, this white girl cannot dance! I have tried but it just aint happening. If I auditioned for the tv show “So You Think You Can Dance” they would use my audition as what not to do! I am okay with that though. There are other ways to praise and worship God. I left about 9:00 (the service started at 7:00) the preacher for that night had just come to the platform and he started singing. I have been in services with them and they would go until 11:00. They are not concerned about time and they are not in hurry.

The thing that really stuck with me last night was how awesome it was to be able to worship God with people of a different culture. Here we were blacks, whites, hispanics, all praising and worshiping the same God. We all had different ways of doing it, but that is what makes it so awesome. I realized that this is just a taste of what it will be like when we all get to heaven and get to worship God. None of the things that we place emphasis here on earth will even matter. I realized that it is not about style of worship but the act of worship itself. I can’t wait to go back tonight and experience the presence of God.

The Heart of Worship

Tonight while we were singing the song”Heart of Worship”, my friend’s four year old walked to the front with her Precious Memories Bible in one hand and her teddy bear in the other. She opened her Bible and placed it on the platform. She just stood there for a minute. Her grandaddy, who is also the pastor of our church, walked over to her and talked to her for a minute and then she picked up her Bible and went and sat down. I realized that this display by a four year old, was really the heart of worship. It wasn’t our singing or praying or anything else, it was a child. That is why Jesus had a special place in His heart for children. There was something so innocent and pure about this simple display of worship. That is what God desires from us. He desires that we come to Him with the heart of a child.

The subject of worship has been rolling around in my head for awhile. I just don’t think we really get it. I know for a long time I didn’t understand what it was or why it was so important. We were discussing this at choir practice last night. It is so hard sometimes, to get people to actually worship. How sad is the church today if we cannot get the average person to engage in worship to a Holy God who has saved us and sustains our life on a daily basis. Have we become that arrogant? Maybe it has to do with the fact that the average church person is bound up in all kinds of ways. Satan does not necessarily want Christians to turn their backs on God, but if he can get them bound up, then he can make them ineffective and that probably describes the average Christian in a church on Sunday. They are bound up in addictions, emotions, unhealthy relationships, wordliness, etc. That is why we cannot worship. It is from a heart that has been truly set free that we can worship. I think that often times we think this is how it is and this is how it always has to be, but that is just another lie from the pit of hell that keeps us from being all that we can be in Christ. I find that is refreshing to be able to go into church and worship with a group of believers. Afterall, we fight the world day in and day out, and it is something about being in the presence of other believers that makes us stronger to face what next will come our way. But the problem is, we can’t just wait until Sunday to worship. It has to be a lifestyle. Something that is practiced everyday. As a worship leader, whether it be on the platform, or in the choir loft, we cannot take others where we have not gone ourselves. This is something that has really hit home with me lately. The other thing is, I cannot make someone come with me. I can give them the opportunity to go into the presence of God but they will not go unless they want to. You cannot coerce people into it. Yeah, there are churches who work up people’s emotions and get an emotional response out of them, but when they walk out of the church doors, it is all over with. That is not true worship, that is entertainment. Again, an encounter with God is a life changing experience. Those who can worship and trust God when all hell breaks loose in their lives, have had an encounter with God. So many churches have become so “seeker friendly”, that we have lost our purpose. We are so afraid that we are going to offend somebody, so we play some music that makes them tap their feet, and give them a message that makes them feel good about themselves. What an injustice we are doing if we do this Sunday after Sunday. Again, the truth that God keeps bringing to me is that many who say “Lord, Lord” will not enter the kingdom of Heaven. They are banking their eternity on the fact that they prayed a prayer or that they go to church, or that they follow a moral code. There is going to be alot of good people in hell. It is our responsibility to make sure that this doesn’t happen. We have to teach people how to walk out their faith. That is why discipleship is so important.

What is worship to you? Is it more than just music? What does it involve? Just a few questions to help challenge us to be all that God has created us to be.
